The spark for the Kids Landscape Projection came, coincidentally, at 1 Spark in 2015.

Jacksonville artist Nicole Holderbaum'southward entry in the local crowd-funding competition was called "Art for Jacksonville's Youth and Beyond," which she said was essentially a "coloring volume landscape" for youth. She didn't win but met a city parks and recreation department staffer who wanted her mural thought to be part of the summer youth programme.

"My passion is art and empowering and uplifting those in demand," she said. "That was the offset time I worked with impoverished children and I haven't looked back since. Realizing their state of affairs, and knowing that I can help, made me want to spend my life helping them."

Holderbaum then founded the Kids Landscape Festival with a grant from the Cultural Quango of Greater Jacksonville and Florida Blue. Four festivals afterwards, the concept evolved into the Kids Mural Projection, an outreach initiative for Title 1 schools that accept a high percentage of children from low-income families. With a subsequent grant from PNC Arts Alive and other fundraising, in 2017 she led students at 27 schools to paint 30 murals on their campuses.

She has an ambitious plan for the 2018-nineteen school year that includes murals at additional schools and at public basketball courts and youth centers run by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida. She also wants a repeat of Colour Me Kona, a popular 2017 mural event at Jacksonville's Kona Skate Park. But information technology all depends on funding.

"Nosotros … can't do any projects until we heighten coin," Holderbaum said.

CREATIVELY EXPRESSING THEMSELVES

Schoolhouse murals price about $500 for paint and other supplies. They are colorful, their messages inspiring. A James Weldon Johnson Middle School mural proclaims, "There's a globe waiting for you, yours is the quest that'south just begun!" Another i at Saint Clair Evans Academy says, "The key to love is caring and respect."

"The kids programme the murals. At every school we go to, I have a conversation with the students about life and success and assertive in yourself. I guide the children through the planning of the mural, just information technology'south all them," Holderbaum said. "The goal is to evidence them that their voice, their opinions, their feelings, matter and are valued."

The inaugural Kona consequence won a Production of the Twelvemonth award from the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. Colour Me Kona "non simply created a point of access to the arts simply as well strengthened and historic customs," according to the council.

The Boys & Girls Clubs component of Holderbaum's plan could have far-reaching impacts, said Paul Martinez, president/CEO of the area Boys & Girls Clubs. Like Championship ane schools, the clubs are in depression-income neighborhoods where in that location is "limited exposure to the arts," he said. Increasing such exposure can help turn their lives around.

"Each club … is strategically located to serve those children who need us most. Children who live in the neighborhoods surrounding our clubs are at a greater risk of poverty, school failure, risky behavior and poor health outcomes," he said. "Research indicates that immature people who participate in arts and humanities programs are more likely to stay in schoolhouse and to avoid harmful behaviors. The challenges of discipline, reasoning and trouble solving inherent in the arts are especially constructive in edifice self-confidence and self-esteem in young people."

He wants to partner with Kids Mural Project for the upcoming schoolhouse year to develop murals at five clubs. Holderbaum volition "start a discussion and chat with youth" and piece of work with them on the concept for each landscape, Martinez said. Such an opportunity to "creatively express themselves" will build self-esteem and sense of belonging, amid other things, he said.

Martinez wants landscape projects at all area clubs somewhen. And Holderbaum wants them at every school.

"By providing support for the children in these communities, we can inspire progression toward safer, stronger and more culturally thriving communities," Holderbaum said. "One solar day this organization volition be painting murals in schools effectually the city all throughout the year and bringing artists from all over our city and beyond into schools and communities to paint murals. … This project has the potential to sincerely influence the future of our city. We want to provide good-paying opportunities for the artists of our customs to ensure that they stay here and grow here and we want to empower kids to believe in themselves and dream large for their futures."
